How to create a glossy badge in Illustrator

In Illustrator, making a good effect depends on the understanding of light and where the shadows and highlights fall. So in this tutorial we are going to work with the light and dark
Draw a Shape

Using the Star tool, create a shape. Click and hold on the Rectangle tool to see the Star tool. Click once on the artboard and define the size you want to use. I have given 1pt stroke of 8E9407 and a radial gradient for my star.

Choose the star and copy it and paste it in front of your existing shape. Remove the stroke and fill it with a solid fill . Then, navigate to Object > Transform > Scale. Scale it to 80%.

Finally round the edges by going to Filter > Stylize > Round Corners. I have used 1px. If you like you can give this shape a gradient to help with the shading effect.

Adding the gloss

First, you need to create a highlighted shape. I have used a circle and then the Direct Selection Tool to achieve it. Turn the Smart Guides, go to View > Smart Guides. Once you have created the label the layer as "curve".

Copy the inner star that you pasted it in front of the original (Edit > Paste in Front). Name this layer "highlight". Give your copy a white fill. Navigate to Transparency menu > Make Opacity Mask. Now go back to your layer "curve" and copy this. Return to the opacity mask and paste it in to show the highlight. Add a gradient to complete the effect.
Then just add some text, as you like..
